Introduction to South America

Value Experience & Experience Value

AT ASIAQUEST TOURS,

We take great pride in offering you what we think is the very best value for your hard-earned dollars. We do not cut corners or promise you one thing and deliver another. We are confident that you will be satisfied with our great attention to detail and our services, including:

AT YOUR SERVICE – WITH A SMILE!

Your first point of contact to join one of our tours is the Sydney Asiaquest Tours office. Here, our friendly and experienced staff will help you choose the tour that suits you best. Feel free to come in and discuss any of our itineraries in detail so that you will be more informed when shopping around for comparable value. The first person you will meet on your arrival in China is your National Escort. At Asiaquest Tours, we make sure that you are provided with an escort that understands Australians and their requirements when travelling. Your escort is not only knowledgeable about the history and culture of the country you are visiting, he/she has a good command of the English language. At the same time, he/she will explain daily village and city life that you observe on the road. Just as importantly, you can rely on your escort to look after you and solve any day-to-day problems you may have along the way. This is also the person that will look after the group's tipping requirements wherever you go.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

At Asiaquest Tours, we specialize in small group travel. We believe that being a member of a small group ensures that you have more personalized attention and that you can blend in more with the locals. For you, the benefits are obvious – more room in the bus, more opportunities to take in all the sights and sounds and more unobstructed snapshots! The maximum group size you could expect is 18 people, although it is more likely that you will be travelling with 10-16 people. Tours generally involve gentle walking but may also involve more strenuous walking in hilly areas. You will be made aware of any activities requiring physical exertion in advance, and you are under no obligation to participate.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

All hotels are not the same, even if they are in a similar price range. We make a special effort to make sure that we use only the best quality hotels within the price range included in your tour. These are chosen on the basis of their cleanliness, consistent high quality service, security and location. While we try to locate our hotels near the centre of town for your convenience, this is not always possible. In the bigger cities lockers are conveniently provided to store your valuables and email services are available in the lobby.

GETTING AROUND

When our groups travel by road, we use modern, air-conditioned coaches that are perfect for small group travel. If there are 12 passengers, we use an 18-seater coach. If there are more then 15 passengers, we provide a 30-35 seater coach to ensure that everyone has enough leg room and that there are plenty of window seats to choose from. Because we want you to experience all forms of transport that our destinations have to offer, we routinely offer comfortable boat, rail and plane travel on our itineraries.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!

One of the highlights of travelling in Asia is the food. For lunch and dinner, our National Escort personally selects the dishes on your menu, making sure that you sample the specialties of the region. Restaurants are chosen for their ability to provide high quality food and service to our groups. If you have any special dietary requirements, let us know and we will arrange everything.

THE THREE Rs – BE RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE AND REALISTIC

At Asiaquest Tours, we respect the people, culture, religion and environment of the countries we tour. We advise our clients about appropriate clothes to pack before departure and continue to recommend suitable dress throughout the tour when visiting places of worship, mausoleums, etc. We ask that our clients do not litter but dispose of any rubbish in appropriate bins (even if that means carrying it around until you reach the hotel). We expect that our overseas operators, guides and associated contractors abide by our standards by not throwing rubbish from vehicles or boats, anchoring amongst delicate coral reefs or treating animals inhumanely. If you notice any activities that you find culturally or environmentally unsound, please report these directly to your escort and to Asiaquest Tours. Due to cultural and language differences, you may find it difficult to stop these practices without offending the person and/or perhaps only temporarily halting the offending activity. Your tour operator can make a lasting difference through careful selection of business associations (i.e. not hiring those who do the wrong thing) and through long-term education. Be realistic – Rome wasn't built in a day and the world cannot be changed overnight!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

So how much extra is all this going to cost you? The good news is that all our tours are fully inclusive and cover the following: accommodation; food and transport during your trip; Australian airport departure tax; fuel levy surcharge 1* ; and domestic flights, train fares, gratuities and taxes at your destination. We think that you will agree that this represents excellent value for money! All you have to pay for on tour are your personal expenses including, your drinks, laundry, telephone calls, emails and shopping. You will also need to pay visa fees in Turkey (US$20) and entry fees/departure taxes in some South American countries (approximately US$100). If you are not a big shopper you will find that about US$1000 to US$1200 is more than enough for the entire journey. Otherwise, bring your credit card along too.

Please be aware that walking, boarding and disembarking coaches and boats and climbing monument stairs are required at many places.  Tours generally involve gentle walking but may also involve more strenuous walking in hilly areas.  You will be made aware of any activities requiring physical exertion in advance, and you are under no obligation to participate.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT

Travellers to South America will be required to undertake touring activities in the high altitude countries of Peru and Bolivia.  It should be noted that altitude sickness may occur at altitudes greater than 2400 m and therefore symptoms may be experienced at Machu Picchu (2430 m), Cuzco (3380 m), Lake Titicaca (3827 m) and La Paz (3000-4100 m).  The onset of altitude sickness is not related to fitness levels or physiological factors and serious symptoms can generally be prevented by ascending slowly and drinking plenty of fluids.  However, if you are concerned about the effects of altitude sickness, please consult your doctor before travelling.

Are there any vaccination requirements?

For travel to all our destination countries we recommend that you take necessary precautions to protect against Hepatitis A and B and tetanus.

BRAZIL & PERU (EAST OF ANDES):

It is compulsory to obtain a Yellow Fever vaccination before entering Brazil or the area east of the Andes in Peru (the Amazon).  A yellow fever certificate is valid for 10 years from the date of issue.

PERU (BELOW 2000 M):

There has been a re-emergence of malaria in Peru and malaria prophylaxis is recommended when travelling anywhere below 2000 m.  We suggest that you visit your GP or a travel vaccination centre at least 65 days prior to your tour departure for advice on this matter.

What our Valued Clients Say

I would like to tell how much my husband Bill and I enjoyed our trip to South America [South America Unveiled]…The trip was an excellent experience. The tour guides were very good, the accommodation could not have been better and the food was sensational. The sights we saw and things we experienced were something that will stay with us forever…It was the best trip that we have been on.

Robyn & Bill Kemp (NSW)

As you know this has been the third successive trip in as many years that we have travelled with you, and each trip gets better than the previous. We returned from our South America trip [Great South American Journey] in November and almost travelling the length and breadth of that magnificent country is something neither of us will ever forget. When we thought nothing could get better in the way of scenic beauty – it did. The accommodation was first class, the meals were delightful and so well presented everywhere we went…One other thing, the tour guides were exceptional and couldn't have been more helpful and informative.

John & Shirley Martin (QLD)

Thought I'd let you know how much Barry and I enjoyed our South America Unveiled trip organized by Asiaquest Tours. They advertise Excellent Value Small Group Tours and we certainly agree with that…The only thing for us to worry about is to be on time in the morning ready for departure for another exciting day. The accommodations were very comfortable and central. It was great that all the meals were provided and most of the time the food was fantastic.

The continent of South America consists of 13 countries, each with its own indigenous cultures, history, natural features and tourist attractions. South America is a land where a fascinating archaeological heritage meets some of the most spectacular wild and scenic places in the world. Although part of the New World, some of the indigenous cultures of South America have been around for a very long time – the Caral Supe people were the contemporaries of urban-dwelling Mesopotamians! The famous Inca culture was very advanced and left behind a wealth of ancient treasures and monuments throughout their Andean empire. Beginning in the 1500s, Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors began converting indigenous peoples to Christianity, enslaving both Indians and Africans to work in their plantations and exploiting the abundant natural resources. Their legacy is felt in the colonial architecture, Latin rhythms, language, religion and sporting pursuits of modern South America. If all this is not enough to attract the intrepid traveller, then there is always the world's longest mountain chain (Andes), the mightiest river on earth (Amazon River) or the greatest biodiversity on the planet (Amazon Basin)! Here we offer you but a taste of 5 South American countries - Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Chile.

From the Pampas to Patagonia, from cosmopolitan cities to the alpine landscapes of the Lakes District, Argentina is a travellers' paradise. It is the cowboy country of South America with its gauchos, estancias, horses and cattle - but it also home to plenty of European immigrants who have helped to shape its architecture, food and culture. It is as famous for producing the best steak as it is for inventing the smouldering tango dance style! The capital city Buenos Aires is a sophisticated city with European architecture, fine dining, shopping malls and a vibrant nightlife! Travel to the south and you will find yourself at Bariloche, an alpine village and budding ski resort surrounded by Nahuel Huapi National Park. Argentina's natural border with Brazil is formed by the mighty Iguazu Falls made up of more than 275 cascades that combining to make it the widest waterfall in the world.

Brazil is best known for its sandy beaches, tropical islands and remarkable biodiversity. Brazilians are as famous for their prowess on the soccer field as they are dancing the sexy samba on the dance floor! Perhaps the most popular city is Rio de Janeiro (January River), sprawled beneath Corcovado Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer. This former capital of Brazil is renowned for its wild partying during Carnaval, New Year's Eve celebrations on Copacabana Beach and for the antics of the rich and famous at Ipanema Beach. Head northeast to experience the music, food, dance and wildly popular festivals in Salvador, where the descendants of African slaves keep their culture well and truly alive. Brazil is the country most associated with Amazonia. Although 8 other countries are found in the Amazon Basin, 60% of the largest rainforest on earth is contained in Brazil. Neighbouring Peru, with 13% rainforest cover is home to near 20% of the world's bird species!

For many, Peru is synonymous with the Inca culture. At its peak, the Inca Empire with its capital at Cuzco, extended throughout the Andes including Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. But it was amazingly short-lived, lasting nearly a century before being conquered by Francisco Pizarro in 1532. Nevertheless, the archaeological treasures of the Inca culture are amongst the most intriguing and mystical ever discovered. Any Inca enthusiast should start at the capital of the Incan empire, Cuzco, the puma-shaped city that is the gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The Old City of Cuzco today contains Spanish colonial buildings and you must visit the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo to get a better idea of the Incan way of life. But the epitome of the Incan 'high life' is of course 'The Lost City Machu Picchu' in its rocky mountain abode. Abandoned by the Incas and reclaimed by the jungle, it was rediscovered in 1911. While the most spectacular approach to Machu Picchu may be a 4-day hike along the Inca Trail, a popular and much quicker way to arrive is to climb aboard the 'Vistadome' train for the 3-hour trip. Whichever way you choose, you will not be disappointed with this hauntingly beautiful monument shrouded in mountain mist!

The birthplace of the Incan Empire is reputedly Lake Titicaca which is shared by both Peru and Bolivia. Myth has it that it was from these magical waters that the founders of the Incan Empire first emerged. But in Bolivia, the Incans were preceded by the Tiwanaku, an agriculture-based culture that thrived for 500 years – Tiwanaku is also the name given to the most important archaeological site in Bolivia on the southern shores of Lake Titicaca. Not far away is Copacabana, the most important Roman Catholic pilgrimage site in South America. Bolivia is the highest country in South America. The capital city La Paz, located at an altitude of 3100-4058 m, will literally take your breath away as you make your way to the upper reaches of the city through steep alleyways. Much of the natural heritage of Bolivia is found in the west of the country where two Andean mountain chains and the altiplano (high plain) straddling them provide a rugged and extreme ecosystem.

Chile is that skinny country on the west coast of South America extending 4300 km from dry desert to ice fields and squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Chile truly has it all! The capital city Santiago is the starting and ending point for most of our tours – it is a modern traveller-friendly city with a spectacular mountain backdrop. Directly northwest of here on the shores of the Pacific Ocean you will find the port city of Valparaiso - this 'Jewel of the Pacific' was listed as a world heritage site for its unique urban design and architecture. Nearby, the fashionable beach resort town of Vina del Mar is popular amongst locals and tourists alike for its tropical weather, golden beaches, beautiful mansions and tree-lined boulevards. For a taste of the wild side, head south to Puerto Montt, gateway to the glaciers, icebergs and penguins of Patagonia.

We at Asiaquest Tours understand and appreciate South American countries and would love the opportunity to introduce you to their diverse and colourful cultures, their fascinating archaeological heritage and to some of the wonders of the natural world. Whatever your reason for travelling to the South America, we will do our best to ensure that your journey is a memorable one from beginning to end.
