Mediterranean Tours

Introduction to the Mediterranean

Value Experience & Experience Value

AT ASIAQUEST TOURS,

We take great pride in offering you what we think is the very best value for your hard-earned dollars. We do not cut corners or promise you one thing and deliver another. We are confident that you will be satisfied with our great attention to detail and our services, including:

AT YOUR SERVICE – WITH A SMILE!

Your first point of contact to join one of our tours is the Sydney Asiaquest Tours office. Here, our friendly and experienced staff will help you choose the tour that suits you best. Feel free to come in and discuss any of our itineraries in detail so that you will be more informed when shopping around for comparable value. The first person you will meet on your arrival in China is your National Escort. At Asiaquest Tours, we make sure that you are provided with an escort that understands Australians and their requirements when travelling. Your escort is not only knowledgeable about the history and culture of the country you are visiting, he/she has a good command of the English language. At the same time, he/she will explain daily village and city life that you observe on the road. Just as importantly, you can rely on your escort to look after you and solve any day-to-day problems you may have along the way. This is also the person that will look after the group's tipping requirements wherever you go.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

At Asiaquest Tours, we specialize in small group travel. We believe that being a member of a small group ensures that you have more personalized attention and that you can blend in more with the locals. For you, the benefits are obvious – more room in the bus, more opportunities to take in all the sights and sounds and more unobstructed snapshots! The maximum group size you could expect is 18 people, although it is more likely that you will be travelling with 10-16 people. Tours generally involve gentle walking but may also involve more strenuous walking in hilly areas. You will be made aware of any activities requiring physical exertion in advance, and you are under no obligation to participate.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

All hotels are not the same, even if they are in a similar price range. We make a special effort to make sure that we use only the best quality hotels within the price range included in your tour. These are chosen on the basis of their cleanliness, consistent high quality service, security and location. While we try to locate our hotels near the centre of town for your convenience, this is not always possible. In the bigger cities lockers are conveniently provided to store your valuables and email services are available in the lobby.

GETTING AROUND

When our groups travel by road, we use modern, air-conditioned coaches that are perfect for small group travel. If there are 12 passengers, we use an 18-seater coach. If there are more then 15 passengers, we provide a 30-35 seater coach to ensure that everyone has enough leg room and that there are plenty of window seats to choose from. Because we want you to experience all forms of transport that our destinations have to offer, we routinely offer comfortable boat, rail and plane travel on our itineraries.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!

One of the highlights of travelling in Asia is the food. For lunch and dinner, our National Escort personally selects the dishes on your menu, making sure that you sample the specialties of the region. Restaurants are chosen for their ability to provide high quality food and service to our groups. If you have any special dietary requirements, let us know and we will arrange everything.

THE THREE Rs – BE RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE AND REALISTIC

At Asiaquest Tours, we respect the people, culture, religion and environment of the countries we tour. We advise our clients about appropriate clothes to pack before departure and continue to recommend suitable dress throughout the tour when visiting places of worship, mausoleums, etc. We ask that our clients do not litter but dispose of any rubbish in appropriate bins (even if that means carrying it around until you reach the hotel). We expect that our overseas operators, guides and associated contractors abide by our standards by not throwing rubbish from vehicles or boats, anchoring amongst delicate coral reefs or treating animals inhumanely. If you notice any activities that you find culturally or environmentally unsound, please report these directly to your escort and to Asiaquest Tours. Due to cultural and language differences, you may find it difficult to stop these practices without offending the person and/or perhaps only temporarily halting the offending activity. Your tour operator can make a lasting difference through careful selection of business associations (i.e. not hiring those who do the wrong thing) and through long-term education. Be realistic – Rome wasn't built in a day and the world cannot be changed overnight!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

So how much extra is all this going to cost you? The good news is that all our tours are fully inclusive and cover the following: accommodation; food and transport during your trip; Australian airport departure tax; fuel levy surcharge 1* ; and domestic flights, train fares, gratuities and taxes at your destination. We think that you will agree that this represents excellent value for money! All you have to pay for on tour are your personal expenses including, your drinks, laundry, telephone calls, emails and shopping. You will also need to pay visa fees in Turkey (US$20) and entry fees/departure taxes in some South American countries (approximately US$100). If you are not a big shopper you will find that about US$1000 to US$1200 is more than enough for the entire journey. Otherwise, bring your credit card along too.

HOW TO BOOK

It is important that you read all the booking conditions, fill out the booking form and forward it to us with a deposit of $300.00 per person. We will mail you confirmation of the tour. It is also recommended that you call us prior to mailing or faxing the booking form to confirm availability of seats on the tour you are interested in. Because ASIAQUEST TOURS runs excellent value small group tours, we get booked out early most of the time.

At ASIAQUEST TOURS, we specialize in small group travel.  The maximum group size you could expect is 18 people, although it is more likely that you will be travelling with 10-16 people.  All tours are fully escorted by our knowledgeable and helpful National Escorts.

What does fully inclusive mean?

When we say that our trips are fully inclusive, we mean it!  You will find a full list of inclusions on Page 3.  Please note that Australian airport departure taxes and tipping are INCLUDED in the tour cost.  In general, the only expenses that are NOT included are travel insurance and your personal expenses.  We think that you will agree that this represents excellent value for money!

TURKEY:

Australian passport holders will have their entry visas for Turkey issued upon arrival at Istanbul airport.  The visa fee is US$20 or 15 EUROs and must be paid in cash at the time of issue.  Prices are current at the time of printing this brochure but are subject to change without notice.

SOME SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES:

Entry fees/departure taxes for some countries within South America cannot be included on your air ticket.  These must be paid locally at the time of arrival or departure.

How physically fit should I be?

Please be aware that walking, boarding and disembarking coaches and boats and climbing monument stairs are required at many places.  Tours generally involve gentle walking but may also involve more strenuous walking in hilly areas.  You will be made aware of any activities requiring physical exertion in advance, and you are under no obligation to participate.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT

Travellers to South America will be required to undertake touring activities in the high altitude countries of Peru and Bolivia.  It should be noted that altitude sickness may occur at altitudes greater than 2400 m and therefore symptoms may be experienced at Machu Picchu (2430 m), Cuzco (3380 m), Lake Titicaca (3827 m) and La Paz (3000-4100 m).  The onset of altitude sickness is not related to fitness levels or physiological factors and serious symptoms can generally be prevented by ascending slowly and drinking plenty of fluids.  However, if you are concerned about the effects of altitude sickness, please consult your doctor before travelling.

Are there any vaccination requirements?

For travel to all our destination countries we recommend that you take necessary precautions to protect against Hepatitis A and B and tetanus.

BRAZIL & PERU (EAST OF ANDES):

It is compulsory to obtain a Yellow Fever vaccination before entering Brazil or the area east of the Andes in Peru (the Amazon).  A yellow fever certificate is valid for 10 years from the date of issue.

PERU (BELOW 2000 M):

There has been a re-emergence of malaria in Peru and malaria prophylaxis is recommended when travelling anywhere below 2000 m.  We suggest that you visit your GP or a travel vaccination centre at least 65 days prior to your tour departure for advice on this matter.

Do I need travel insurance?

It is a condition of travelling with ASIAQUEST TOURS that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers you for the duration of your trip.  We would be happy to arrange insurance for you or you are welcome to shop around.

What if I am a single traveller?

Single travellers have a choice of paying a single supplement or sharing a room with someone of the same gender.  While ASIAQUEST TOURS will make every effort to arrange share accommodation, we accept no responsibility for the suitability of the rooming partner.  If at any time during the tour a client considers their rooming partner to be unsuitable, ASIAQUEST TOURS will endeavour to arrange a single room AT EXTRA COST, subject to availability in the same hotel.

If we are unable to find a rooming partner of the same gender, ASIAQUEST TOURS will pay the single supplement charge for hotel rooms.

The continent of South America spans the full range of climatic extremes from tropical rainforest to glacial ice.  However in general, for the destination countries described here, the best time to visit is August through to May.  Take note that February is the rainy season for Machu Picchu.

How early should I book?

We recommend that you book your trip 6 months or at least 4-5 months prior to the departure date to ensure a seat.  Because ASIAQUEST TOURS runs excellent value small group tours, we get booked out early most of the time.

What our Valued Clients Say

Special thanks for giving us the experience of a lifetime with the Wonders of the Middle East tour.  To quote our fellow travelers: great people, great holiday and fantastic sights which will be etched in our minds for a long time.  Tour leaders, guides and drivers made it a world we did not want to leave.  Of the eight tours we have done with your company this was one of the most spectacular and the perfect way to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

Where to start?  The entire trip [Egypt] was absolutely fantastic!  Sheriff was just filled with passion and knowledge and I looked forward to all the tours.  Magdy was what made the trip exceptional.  He was very professional and was really good with all the kids…Absolutely outstanding!

Elena Katahanasy (Qld)

I would like to say thank you for a really wonderful trip [Egypt, Greece & Turkey].  All the arrangements went like clockwork and I have seen some fantastic things.  The guides were all great people who knew their subject matter and who looked after us in many ways beyond their allocated role.

What do the countries Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan have in common? In order to answer this question, we have to look back to ancient times. All four countries once formed part of the mighty Ottoman Empire that, at its peak, encompassed south-eastern Europe, western Asia and northern Africa. It was the strategic locations of these Mediterranean countries between Europe and Asia and between Asia and Africa, and their ready access to the Red and Mediterranean Seas, that made them pivotal to the lucrative silk and spice trade in ancient times. It was also this prime location that left them vulnerable to attack by marauding armies and foreign invaders, leaving in their wake a rich legacy of cultural and religious diversity. The prosperity of Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan is still evident in the opulence of their architecture and the size and scale of their monuments, not the least of which are the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. To travel in this part of the world is to live and breathe history – even while enjoying modern comforts, you are never more than a stone's throw away from significant ancient relics.

Quite apart from its charming white-washed villages and stunning natural beauty, Greece has exerted its cultural influences far and wide and is known as the cradle of Western civilisation. The capital Athens is a cosmopolitan modern city but you only have to look to the horizon to feast your eyes on one of the most important ancient sites of the Western World, the Acropolis. Venture southwards and you will find a major centre of ancient Greek civilisation at Mycenae. Here the fortified walls of the citadel are so massive that it was thought that Cyclops himself lifted the heavy rocks into place. And on the island of Rhodes where the sea and sun are the main attractions, you will find a relic of the Ottoman Empire, the pink-domed Mosque of Suleyman, tucked away in medieval Old Town.

Turkey is the land bridge where East meets West, where one bank of the Bosphorus Strait is Asian and the other is European. Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) was the ancient capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Its history of trading is today encapsulated in the bustle and chaos of the Covered Bazaar and in the colours and exotic aromas of the Spice Market. Travel to the southwest and you will reach the present-day capital city of Ankara, where Ataturk based his struggle for Turkey's independence. Although today it is a modern city whose design was influenced by European urban planners, it still boasts a Byzantine-era Citadel and a superb museum showcasing Anatolian archaeological artefacts. Ankara is also a stopover for those heading further south to experience cave-dwelling in the surreal landscape of Cappadocia or to be mesmerised by the Whirling Dervishes of Konya.

Egypt was described by Herodotus as 'the gift of the Nile'. As climate change turned savannah to desert, Egyptians turned to the Nile where the rhythm of life was determined by the ebb and flow of its waters. The most romantic way to capture the essence of Egypt is to sail the Nile River on a large cruiser or on a traditional felucca. The largely modern capital city Cairo has at its heart the medieval Islamic Centre and one of the world's great bazaars, the Khan El-Khalili. To the south, Memphis was the ancient capital of Egypt when the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World, the pyramids at Giza, was being constructed. The stretch of river between Aswan and Luxor is not only scenic but is a living museum of magnificent monuments.

Jordan is located within the fertile crescent that gave rise to the earliest civilisations of Mesopotamia, Syria and Palestine. Although it attracted some of the earliest tourists seeking the curative powers of the Dead Sea, Jordan became a cultural and political backwater during the height of the Ottoman Empire. It was not until the rediscovery of the ancient capital city of Petra in 1812 that interest was rekindled in this part of the world. This rose-coloured fortress city is carved out of canyon walls and is approached via a narrow winding passageway known as Siq Canyon. In the mountainous north is Jerash, the best-preserved Roman provincial city in the Middle East. While the capital Amman has less historical interest than other Middle Eastern cities, you can still enjoy fabulous city views while sipping your coffee surrounded Byzantine ruins at Darat-al-Funun!

We at Asiaquest Tours understand and appreciate Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan and would love the opportunity to introduce you to their proud and welcoming inhabitants, their shared historical inheritance and to their unique charms. Whatever your reason for travelling to the Mediterranean, we will do our best to ensure that your journey is a memorable one from beginning to end.
